Many people do not realize that it is very possible to take the job they are currently working and turn it into a work at home job. In some cases it could be very beneficial to their employer to do this. In order to make the switch to working at home, though, you have to convince the company that it is a good idea. To do that you need to know for sure it will work.
Work at Home Job Characteristics
Work at home jobs differ slightly from your typical job outside the home. You have to understand that not every job can be a work at home job. However, if you have a will to succeed then almost any job can be a work at home job. Here are some things a work at home job needs in order to work:
1. A person has to be able to work independently
2. It does not require a lot of complicated and expensive equipment
3 The worker and the company can communicate efficiently through email
4.The worker is not required to be onsite everyday to supervise others or attend meetings/training
5. The company does not handle super sensitive information that can not leave the company’s property
6. The employee does not have to receive mail that can not be delivered to their home
These are just some general points, but you can see that basically a job needs to be flexible enough that a person not being physically at the company would work.
Comparing your Job to a Work at Home Job
Before you ask if you could turn your job into a work at home job you have to take a look at it and see if it would be a good work at home job. You need to consider how much it would cost you to do the job at home because most often you will be provided with minimal, if any, supplies to work at home.
You should look at the criteria above and see if your job fits them. If you job seems to fit the bill then it is time to approach your boss.
Approaching your Boss to Make the Switch
You want to go to your boss well prepared to convince him that you working at home would be a good idea. You have to look at yourself and make sure that you have shown you are reliable and responsible because if you have not then you may as well forget about working at home. Your boss will want to know that you can work off sight and still get things done.
If you have a good track record then you can start telling him all the good things about you working at home. Show him how it will work and tell him exactly how you would pull it off. You may even want to type something up highlighting everything you say just in case he needs to go to his boss and ask him if it would be okay.
